Dining out on St. John adds up fast. Every suite at Marketplace Suites comes with a kitchenette, stocked with a refrigerator, cooktop, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, cookware and dishes. The island’s main grocery store is one floor down. Make your own breakfast, pack a cooler for the beach and put the savings toward the rest of your trip.

Why it matters

A kitchen changes what a week on St. John costs

St. John is a small island, and nearly everything on a restaurant menu arrived by barge. That’s why eating out here costs what it does. A kitchenette gives you the choice. Cook when it suits you, and go out when you feel like it.

Breakfast without a reservation

Coffee maker, toaster and refrigerator in the room. Start the day on your own schedule instead of waiting for a table, and get to the beach before the crowd does.

Pack the beach lunch

Trunk Bay, Maho and Hawksnest have little or nothing in the way of food service. Pack a cooler in your own kitchenette before you head out and you can stay all afternoon.

Eat out when you want to

Cook breakfast and lunch in the suite and dinner out stops being a budget decision. Cruz Bay’s restaurants are a short walk from your door.

Self-catering, made easy

The grocery store is downstairs

Starfish Market sits on the ground floor of the same building, open daily from 7:30am to 9pm. It’s the island’s main grocery store, with fresh produce, meats and a bakery. You won’t need a car or a taxi to shop for the week. Take the elevator.

The rest of The Marketplace is right there too, with a deli for gourmet sandwiches, a coffee shop, a juice and smoothie bar, a pharmacy, an ATM and a walk-in medical clinic. Do as the locals do. Stock up once and settle in.

Good to know

Kitchenette questions, answered

Do all the suites have a kitchenette?

Yes. All twelve suites include a kitchenette with a refrigerator, cooktop, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, cookware, and dishes and utensils. There’s no room type here without one.

Is it a full kitchen or a kitchenette?

A kitchenette. You get a cooktop rather than a full oven range, and the refrigerator size varies by suite. Some are full height and some are under-counter. It handles breakfast, beach lunches, a pasta dinner or reheating leftovers, but it isn’t a full kitchen.

How close is the nearest grocery store?

One floor down. Starfish Market is on the ground level of The Marketplace, the same building as the suites, and is open daily from 7:30am to 9pm. It carries fresh produce, meats, bakery items and general groceries.

Are dishes, pots and pans provided, or do I bring my own?

Provided. Cookware, dishes and utensils come with every suite, along with linens and towels. Bring groceries and whatever specialty items you can’t live without.

Can I walk to Cruz Bay town and the ferry?

Yes. The suites sit in the heart of Cruz Bay, within walking distance of the shops, restaurants and the inter-island ferry dock. The walk back up from the dock with luggage is steep, so plenty of guests take a short taxi on arrival and walk everywhere after that.

How many people can a suite sleep?

Between two and six, depending on the suite. Studios and one-bedrooms sleep two, several one-bedrooms add a sofa bed for four, and the two-bedroom suite sleeps six.

Is this a hotel or a vacation rental?

A bit of both. Marketplace Suites is a boutique hotel in Cruz Bay, so you book by the night and get the linens, towels and housekeeping you’d expect from a hotel. Each suite also has its own kitchenette and living space, the way a rental would.
