So, whether you are looking for a refreshing mocktail or an indulgent cocktail, you will find something to love in this roundup. The History of Caribbean Rum

Many of the flavorful cocktails in the USVI contain rum, so it is only fitting that we start with a brief history of this iconic spirit. Rum is believed to have originated in the Caribbean islands in the 17th century. It was originally made from sugarcane juice or molasses, and it quickly became a staple of island life. Today, rum is produced all over the world, but the Caribbean islands, including the Virgin Islands, still produce some of the best rum available. If you are a history buff and love rum, one point of interest to visit is Reef Bay Rum Factory Ruins in St. John. There, you can learn about the history of rum-making on the island and see some of the remains of an old rum factory.

The Best Cocktails in the US Virgin Islands

Now that we have a little bit of background on rum let's get to the drinks! The Virgin Islands are home to many delicious cocktails, but here are a few of our favorites.

The Painkiller

The painkiller is one of the most popular (and most potent!) USVI cocktails, originating at the Soggy Dollar Bar on the island of Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands. The drink is a mixture of rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, cream of coconut and a dusting of nutmeg on the top. You'll only need one or two of these USVI drinks because they live up to their name in a good way!

Rum Punch

Rum punch is refreshing and reminds you of what you love on a tropical vacation. You'll find it on just about every bar's drink menu in the Virgin Islands. The classic version contains lime juice, pineapple juice and orange juice, simple syrup, Angostura bitters, grenadine and rum. The citrus mix will really hit the spot after a day of hiking Caneel Hill or snorkeling in the waters of Haulover Bay in St. John.

Cruzan Confusion

This beverage is a must-try when in the Virgin Islands! Cruzan Confusion is a mix of light and dark rum, passion fruit juice, pineapple juice and grenadine. It's best served over ice and can be garnished with an orange slice or cherry. It's a delicious drink to have by your side while you are toddling around on the St. John beaches and watching the glorious sunsets.

Mocktails in the Virgin Islands

Not interested in alcohol? No problem! There are plenty of delicious mocktails to be found in the USVI as well. One of our favorites is the Virgin Island Cooler, a refreshing mix of fresh lime juice, lemonade, and fruit punch. Another great non-alcoholic choice is the coconut-pineapple delight, a mix of pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and grenadine. Both mocktails are perfect for enjoying by the pool or on the beach.

Rum Swizzle

The rum swizzle is the national drink of Bermuda, but it is also popular in the Virgin Islands. It is made with dark rum, lime juice, simple syrup and Angostura bitters. The ingredients are then poured over ice and served with a garnish of mint or citrus. What a joy to have while sitting on the beach with your toes in the powdery sand!

Lime in the Coconut

Lime in the coconut is a refreshing and easy-to-make drink that can be enjoyed any time of day. It's made with fresh lime juice, coconut water and rum (of course!). The coconut water adds a natural sweetness to the drink, while the lime gives it a tart and tangy flavor. This is one of the most popular cocktails in the US Virgin Islands and is tailor-made for relaxing among soothing tropical trade winds and swaying palm trees.

Where to Get Them

Now that we've whetted your appetite with all these delicious USVI cocktails, you might be wondering where to get them. You can find many of these drinks on the menu at the swim out bar at the Lime Out on the Southeast side of Saint John in Coral Harbor. The bar is known for being eco-friendly and for its tasty and fresh tuna tacos. Additionally, the bartenders there are happy to make your food and drinks with fresh fruit galore and locally sourced ingredients, provided you swim out to them!
